Last March, Congresswoman Niki Tsongas (D-MA) and Congressman Thomas Petri (R-WI) introduced H.R.4937, a bill that if passed, would increase the allowable level of assets, like savings and retirement accounts, from $2,000 for individuals and $3,000 for couples, to $5,000 and $7,500 respectively. The proposed bill would exclude qualified retirement accounts, and Educational Savings Accounts and Individual Development Accounts for recipients under age 65.
