The Mental Health Association of Nebraska recognizes the importance of consumer involvement at all levels of program development and service delivery and MHA-NE actively advocates for mental health consumers in their fight for the right to play an active role in their treatment and recovery programs. Your support, through your membership and ongoing donations, provides MHA-NE with the financial and educational "clout" only a large membership base can provide.Individual empowerment comes from the knowledge of recovery and self-help techniques, and through increasing involvement in social activities within their communities. Toward this goal, MHA-NE provides wellness training, voter empowerment activities and community education opportunities. Community based Chapters provide members with fellowship, social activities and community projects.
To assist consumers in their individual recovery efforts, MHA-NE consumer facilitators provided Mary Ellen Copeland’s Wellness Recovery Action Plan (WRAP) workshops to consumers across Nebraska. In order to encourage the spread of recovery and wellness education, MHA-NE can also provide advanced level "train the trainer" workshops to qualified individuals interested in providing basic level training in their communities.
Community education is another important component in securing consumer empowerment rights. Individual and systemic bias remains the largest obstacle in the path toward self-directed care. Presented by trained consumer/facilitators, MHA-NE Sensitivity and Stigma Training workshops provide a unique look at the discrimination that the mentally ill face everyday and techniques to recognize and overcome commonly held misconceptions. These workshops are available to providers and service professionals, local and state employees, and school districts statewide.
Your ongoing support is critical in providing MHA-NE with the muscle to continue the fight for the inclusion of mental health consumers in all aspect of their lives.
